Message to the President

Posted: August 28, 2010 in How to get involved

Though the media, the U.S. government and BP would like to cheer “Mission Accomplished” when it comes to BP’s drilling disaster, there are still tens of millions of gallons of oil in the Gulf and much more dispersed oil – and chemical dispersant itself – below the surface.

As Gulf communities and the dolphins, whale sharks, and other marine life that call this region home begin the long road to recovery, it’s essential that the federal government make a commitment to this effort not just today, but for many years to come.

Please take a moment to tell our leaders that this is no time for BP and federal government to declare victory:

There is a crucial need to continue monitoring the Gulf and its ecosystems and species for the effects of this disaster that have not yet appeared, and those that may not emerge for years. Restoration plans must be put in place quickly and constantly revised as new impacts come to light. And the coastal communities that have been most impacted by this disaster must have a say in how the restoration of the Gulf moves forward.

BP’s crude may no longer be spewing into the Gulf, but the ripple effects of this disaster will be felt for decades.  Now is the time to urge our leaders to commit to the long-haul effort to make sure that Gulf communities, and ecosystems, are made whole once again, click here to send your message.
